UNDERSTANDING TAXATION

Taxing Authorities such as:

  • the County Board of Supervisors,
  • the City Mayor & Board of Aldermen,
  • the School District Boards,


set Tax Rates and Levy Taxes based on required money to provide services to residents.

The money raised by taxes is used to provide services demanded by the Taxpayer such as:

  • schools
  • courts
  • police protection
  • fire protection
  • roads & bridges
  • hospitals
  • etc.


Therefore, Tax Rates are set to meet the approved budget of the different taxing authorities.

A Tax Rate is calculated by dividing the amount of tax to be raised by the total assessed value. For example:
